The Mayor of North Tyneside is the executive mayor of the borough of North
Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. The incumbent since 2013 is Norma Redfearn. A Mayoral Referendum was held on 5 May 2016 to determine if residents wished to retain the Mayoral system or change to a Committee system. The number of votes for continuing with the mayoral system was 32,546, which was 57.5%, while 23,703 wanted a committee system - 41.8%.
North Tyneside will keep its mayor after people voted to retain the role in a referendum.
The number of votes for continuing with the mayoral system was 32,546, which was 57.5%, while 23,703 wanted a committee system - 41.8%.
The count was held at the Parks Leisure Centre, in North Shields , where the result was declared at around 3am on Friday.
Tory group leader, Judith Wallace, who campaigned to keep a mayor, said she was pleased.
She added: “This shows that people value the fact that a directly elected mayor is democratically accountable. And secondly, people will remember well that previously when we had a committee system, North Tyneside Council was in financial chaos and on the verge of bankruptcy, and services were nowhere as good for residents.
“A mayoral system has led to an overwhelming improvement in standards.”
Current mayor, Norma Redfearn, who has another year in office, said she was delighted with the result.
