The Mayor of Milton Keynes is chosen each year at the Annual Council Meeting
(usually in May). During his or her year in office the Mayor is the First Citizen of Milton Keynes and as such is an ambassador for the town and for the Council.
The Mayor for 2016-17 is Councillor Steve Coventry
Cllr Coventry was elected onto Milton Keynes Council in 1996 on the shadow authority of the new MK Unitary Authority, He has been a councillor ever since, representing the Woughton Ward in its various guises, and now Woughton and Fishermead Ward. He was elected Deputy Mayor for the 2015/16 Council Year, and Mayor for 2016/17.
He was first elected to Woughton Parish Council in 1995, after having moved onto Coffee Hall in 1992. He served on the Parish Council until 2015. His main interests there were Environment and Community Safety, and he was Chair of their Policy and Resources Committee for eight years.
Cllr Coventry first moved to Bletchley with his family in 1961 at the age of three. His sister was born in Bletchley in 1963, and the pair went through all of their education at local schools in Bletchley. He was in the first intake at Rivers First School in Trent Road, then went onto Rickley Junior School, and the old Denbigh School in Cornwall Grove. So he feels he is a real Bletchley boy! He was a train driver on the old British Rail from 1974, which he joined straight from school at the age of 16.
His passion is always trying to look after the underdog. He is a firm believer in Trade Unions, and has an interest in Social Housing and Public Transport, as well as policing, and our health services. He is an avid Chelsea FC supporter, although now the MK Dons are here in Milton Keynes he has split loyalties, and try and go to see them when he has the time and opportunity.
Cllr Coventry has three grown children.
The Mayor will be supported this year by the Mayoress, Ms Liane Lacey. The Redway School is their chosen charity for 2016/17. More information about The Redway School can be found here: http://www.theredway.net/pages/home/
