Born in King’s Lynn in 1951 David Whitby was brought up in Clenchwarton, where he attended the local primary school and then Terrington St Clement Secondary Modern School.
After David left school he started work for Woodcocks Bakery in King’s Lynn High Street. He took the opportunity to start a day release City & Guilds catering course at the College of West Norfolk and subsequently moved to the Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton, training as a chef for two years.
It was during this time that David met Linda and they were married at Clenchwarton Church in 1973 and bought a house in the village. They had two children and now have four grandchildren.
Once David had qualified as a chef he moved to the General Hospital and then the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Having joined as a chef, David soon progressed to the role of Head Chef and took responsibility for staff training specifically with reference to food hygiene, including Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Control of Substances Hazard to Health (COSHH).
David eventually took early retirement in 2011 having worked for the hospital for over 41 years. In addition to his role as Head Chef, David was involved with the Hospital Social Club Committee and often helped to run the social club bar for various social events.
Away from work David was a member of the school PTA; the rules of which were specifically changed in order that David could remain a member in the years following his children leaving the school. David regularly undertook small jobs around the school and helped to organise many fundraising events to support the school.
David has been involved with the North West Norfolk Conservative Association for many years and became the Councillor for the Clenchwarton Ward in 2011. As Borough Councillor David has been involved with the Regeneration, Environment and Community Panel, Cabinet Scrutiny Committee. King’s Lynn Drainage Board, Standards Committee and the Recycling Task Group. He has also chaired the South and West Lynn Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel and helped with the Town Allotment Judging for the past four years and the Classic Car Event on Heritage Day.
In his spare time David is a keen gardener and enjoys DIY - over the years both David and Linda have dedicated a lot of their spare time to assisting elderly neighbours in maintaining their gardens and homes.
Linda has recently retired after over 30 years working at Clenchwarton primary school where she helped in the kitchen with lunches, manned the office and worked as a teaching assistant. Linda’s interests are now her 4 grandchildren and knitting; for the grandchildren, any of her friends who have new babies and for the special care unit at the Hospital. She even finds time to make gift cards.
David and Linda have enjoyed serving as Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for the last year and are now looking forward to meeting more wonderful people across the borough as Mayor and Mayoress.
The Mayor’s Charity for 2016 – 2017 will be in aid of The Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company.
