A NEW mayor of Blackburn with Darwen took office last night.
Lib Dem councillor Karimeh Foster described the ‘heavy responsibility’ placed on her shoulders by the new role.
In her inauguration speech in the council chamber at Blackburn Town Hall last night, the Whitehall councillor, who came to the area from Jordan 33 years ago, spoke fondly of her memories of her home country and pledged to work to strengthen community relations in the borough.
She said: “It has not always been easy – my family and I have suffered aspects of discrimination over the years.
"I see it as part of my duty as mayor this year to strengthen the sense of community cohesion between all sectors of the community.
"Not just between racial groups, but between young and old, and as a Darrener dare I say between Blackburn and Darwen.”
The deputy mayor will be Labour councillor Zamir Khan.
