Mayor of Scarborough

The Mayor was born in Scarborough and has been a farmer all his working life. He lives and manages the family farming business in the village of Cayton. Cllr Green is married to Val, who is also his Mayoress. They have two daughters, Karen and Rebecca, son James and they enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren.

Cllr Green was first elected to Scarborough Borough Council for the 1999 to 2003 term. His latest term of office on the council began in 2011. He is also a councillor on Cayton Parish Council and Chairman of the local flood prevention group. He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Scarborough since 1997 and was its President from 2009 to 2010. He is a governor of St Peter’s RC Primary School and Cayton Community Primary School.

The Mayor has helped wife Val to establish the Stained Glass Centre at Killerby. They have also embraced farm diversification by offering bed and breakfast at Killerby Cottage Farm and welcoming guests from all over the world to the area. The Mayoress is the fourth generation of the Lazenby family to work with stained glass and she has produced stained glass windows throughout the country. Val is President of the Inner Wheel Club of Scarborough.

The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Simon Green said:

“It is a very special honour for Val and me to have the Mayoral office bestowed upon us. We will do our best to serve the borough as Mayor and Mayoress and we look forward to making new friendships and supporting many fantastic causes.”

The Mayor and Mayoress are promoting the idea that everyone is ‘Better Together’ as their mayoral theme for the year. The Mayor explained:

“If communities living in our borough work together, we are stronger than if we work individually. We are keen to focus attention on our area’s young people and our older residents who face problems with transport, finance and social contact.  We feel that if we can bring these groups together, they will benefit hugely from sharing their knowledge, experiences and time.”
