Mayor of Bath & North East Somerset

CARMARTHEN has a new mayor. The Mayor Making ceremony was held at the town's Guildhall on Friday evening when Councillor Arwel Lloyd handed over the chains to Barry Williams.

Councillor Williams ,from Johnstown, had been deputy mayor over the past 12 months.

He plays a part in local health issues and is a member of the Carmarthen Local Health Board.

Councillor Wyn Thomas becomes deputy mayor and Dorothy Bere becomes the town sheriff

Phil Kynaston, chair of the Carmarthen Twinning Association, was recognised for his work in forging links with Lesneven in northern Brittany in France. For more than three decades Carmarthen has held annual exchange trips with the people of Lesneven. This summer they will visit Carmarthen.

Sulwyn and Glenys Thomas were honoured for their work in the community and Sulwyn's work on Radio Glangwili.

Another feature of the evening was an official presentation of a trowel to the town council that had been used to lay the first foundation stone of the Park Hall estate in Carmarthen back in 1946. The trowel had been used by town Mayor John Jenkins and was returned to the council by great niece Judith Hussell.
