The new Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland are Councillor Alan Emerson and
his wife Janice, who will be supported by the new Deputy Mayoress, Cllr Doris MacKnight and her consort, husband Keith.
I was born, raised and brought up in the City of Sunderland, where I have lived all of my life. My father worked in the ship yards all of his working life and my mother worked as a domestic. My wife Jan and myself have two grown up children and two grand daughters. We all live in Ryhope which I am proud to represent as a City Councillor
After leaving Southmoor school I started work as an apprentice Telephone Engineer with the old GPO in 1966, a company I remained with for all of my working life. During this time I had many roles in what became British Telecom, from Network Technician to Network Planning Manager, followed by being a Senior Field Operations Manager in the North East, finally retiring as a Senior Network Quality Manager on national projects after 40 years.
After retirement I found I had more time to become interested in local politics and decided it was time to give something back to help improve the area and the city where I lived. I was proud to be elected as a Councillor for Ryhope in 2010.
My wife Jan has lived in Sunderland in the Ryhope area all of her life. After leaving school Jan worked in various factories in Sunderland before being employed by the old Social Services Department of the City Council for 25 years. Originally as a domestic and eventually becoming a Residential Care Officer looking after people with Learning Disabilities, a job that she really enjoyed. After leaving the Service Jan has been fully occupied helping to look after our 2 grandchildren and supporting me as a Councillor.
During my time as a Councillor I have been a member then vice chair of the East Area Committee with responsibility for people issues in the east of the city. I have also been a member of the Corporate Parenting Committee and the East Area Children's Local Area Board as well as the Licensing and Regulatory Committees. Over the past two years I have been an active member of the Health Housing and Adult Services Scrutiny Panel and for the past 4 years a Board Member of Gentoo Sunderland.
My interests include anything to do with computers and technology, in fact I am probably a bit of a new gadget geek always looking to have the latest piece of kit. I enjoy spending time with our grandchildren and I am learning some whole new ways to do maths. We both enjoy foreign holidays, especially somewhere with historical buildings and an interesting past. I have been an avid supporter of Sunderland Football for over 50 years and in some seasons rarely missed a match, home or away. We both enjoy socialising and eating out with friends and for several years I organised a quiz in my local pub.
