Our Mayor
Councillor Mohammed Ayub was elected Mayor in May 2016. He was born in
Pakistan and moved to Reading with his parents in the 1970s. He studied at Newtown Primary school and Alfred Sutton Boys secondary school and finished his education in 1976 when he joined his family retail fashion business in the Broad Street Mall. He left the family business in 1985 and worked at the Austin Rover Plant in Oxford for two years, before re-joining the family business. In the 1990's he became a self-employed Hackney Carriage Driver.
Mohammed has been a member of the Labour Party for 17 years and became a Councillor for Abbey Ward in 2007. He has been a resident in Abbey Ward for 33 years and enjoys dedicating his time to help the residents of Reading.
The Mayor represents the council at events, welcoming guests and visiting local organisations. He also chairs full council meetings. The Deputy Mayor may stand in if the Mayor is unavailable.
