Welcome to Perth and Kinross
I am very proud and privileged to be the Provost of Perth and Kinross.
One of the largest and most successful Scottish Local Authorities, Perth and Kinross sits at the very heart of Scotland, at the gateway to the Highlands. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is a "must visit" destination in Scotland.
The regional capital of the area is Perth, known as "The Fair City" since the publication of Sir Walter Scott's novel, 'The Fair Maid of Perth' in 1828. Set in a stunning location on the River Tay, Perth is a modern, vibrant, successful city which proudly celebrates its unique and historic past while looking firmly to the future.
As part of the 2012 Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Perth was granted city status, which gave us a marvellous opportunity to celebrate! And celebrate we did, starting off with our Diamond Jubilee weekend, which saw over 1000 pipers from all over the world parade through the streets of Perth, and Scotland's first Kilt Run. The Olympic Torch then visited Perth and Kinross as it made its way the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. We were also very honoured to welcome Her Majesty The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Perth as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour.
Now that Perth has regained its city status, we are all looking forward to new opportunities on the horizon, to build on our great traditions and to increase economic growth and prosperity for the area.
City status provides us with a platform to develop in many areas including growing the cultural offering of our area, through increased events in partnership with others to attract residents and visitors at key times such as the period from Advent through to Christmas and beyond.
We will also continue to develop our relationships abroad, re-establishing our ties with the Scandinavian countries that have a shared history with Scotland. Through these developments Perth and Kinross will realise its determination to be a vibrant and successful area, and maintain a safe, secure and healthy environment for its citizens.
