Councillor Tahir Khan has been member of Luton Borough Council for 10 years.
Born in Bangladesh, Tahir came to the UK in 1982, joining his father who was working for Vauxhall Motors in Luton. He has been widely involved in the life of the town since joining the Bangladesh Welfare Association in 1986 at the age of 19 as a Community Worker in order to support the local community with their challenges.
Tahir has been working for local government for over 26 years in various capacities including at senior management level. He has worked for Bedfordshire County Council, Luton Borough Council and some of the London boroughs. Special interests include young people’s issues and developing opportunities for them to participate in positive activities.
He was elected as Councillor 2007 and has served on a number of committees. He successfully served as Lead Executive Member for Children Services for five years. . He is also on the Board of Directors at London Luton Airport Limited and has served as a school governor for over 15 years, currently acting as Chair of Governors at Denbigh Primary.
Upon his election has become the first Mayor of Luton from a Bangladeshi heritage.
The Mayor has chosen Keech Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support and Crescent Care as his nominated charities for the year.
Cllr Raja Saleem was appointed as Deputy Mayor and represents Saints Ward. He has extensive experience of the role having previously been both Mayor and Deputy Mayor twice. Raja has an outstanding knowledge of Luton and has served on numerous committees and bodies through his 21 years of service.
