Councillor Cynthia Thompson is the new Lord Mayor of Exeter. She will use her term in office to raise money for the Devon Freewheelers.
Cllr Thompson told the Citizen: “Devon Freewheelers are a team of 50 volunteer emergency vehicle drivers who are dedicated to providing a service supporting the NHS in delivering essential blood, samples, medication and donor breast milk to hospitals throughout Devon. I can’t think of a better charity to support during my year as Lord Mayor of Exeter.”
Cllr Thompson was born and grew up in St. Thomas, and attended local schools. She gained a Licentiateship from Trinity College of Music, London, where she studied piano for three years under the Czechoslovakian concert pianist Madame Eva Bernathova and later gained a diploma in music in the multiple disciplines of music theory, including composition.
Married to David, they have three grown up children, five grandchildren and another on the way! Having moved around the country through her husband’s work, she has worked as a peripatetic music teacher in various schools and colleges.
First elected to the City Council in the Pinhoe ward in 2008, she enjoys making patchwork items from recycled materials and improvising at the piano.
Joining her as Deputy Lord Mayor is Cllr Peter Holland. Born in London, Cllr Holland moved to Devon in 1968. He was first elected onto the City Council in 2014 and represents the Pennsylvania ward.
