His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Abey Stevenson is most honoured to have been elected as the First Citizen of the Borough and is looking forward to serving residents of Erewash during the civic year 2016 to 2017. During his term of office, Abey will be supported by his wife Anne but his daughters Sara Abigail Oakes and Johanna McNeil will step in when Anne is unavailable.
Councillor Stevenson has represented the “Little Eaton Breadsall” ward on the Borough Council since 2011 (which covered the Morley ward as well). In 2015 Abey was re-elected to represent the Wards which now include Stanley. Getting involved with, and being in the community has been Abey’s greatest pleasure to serve as and when required. As the Mayor of Erewash, Abey will do his utmost to serve the residents of our wonderful Borough and feels that it is a privilege and honour to do so.
Abey was born in Bombay and went to St. Peter’s Boarding school in the Hill Station town of Panchgani. From there he moved back to Bombay and joined Cathedral & John Cannon High School finishing his higher education there. Abey was keen on sports, especially boxing, and suffered a broken nose for his efforts. After being Savage House Captain, Abey came to England and joined Loughborough College studying Mechanical Engineering. After University Abey joined International Combustion in Derby in the Contracts department and finally joined the Project Management team on Dungeness Nuclear Power Station.
Abey left IC Limited and set up Ziggi’s, a fashion store on Sadler Gate in Derby and Victoria Street in Nottingham which included the popular “The Q in the Corner” Coffee Shop. Anne and Abey retired from the business in 2009.
In 2007 Abey stood for election to Nottingham City Council in the Basford ward. Though unsuccessful, it gave him an insight into local politics and the issues of concern of residents.
Abey is a keen car enthusiast and enjoys going to car events displaying his cars, and he can be found most nights oiled up in his garage or under a car! Abey and Anne have a son in the USA, two daughters, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren and get immense pleasure spending time with them all.
