Councillor Benstead was educated at Impington Village College, the Cambridge College of Further Education (now Cambridge Regional College) and the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now ARU).
During his time on the council he has taken particular interest in Licencing and in the running of the Council. He also takes a close interest in the preservation of Cambridge's green spaces, having been a founder of "Save our Commons and Meadows" (SOCAM) in the late 1980's.
Along with his time as Councillor, he has spent thirty years working in the roofing industry. He is very keen to encourage young people into the construction industry, and concerned with the growing skills gap in the construction industry, he is involved in expanding training and apprenticeships, concentrating on the "Cinderella" trades, like roofing and groundworks.
His hobbies include football, boxing, horse racing and taking long walks in the Cambridgeshire country side. He enjoys films of all genres, soul music, good food (too much!) and likes a good party!
Councillor Benstead is very proud of his home city, and is honoured to be chosen to be its Mayor.
