Alan Davies gives the lowdown on stand-up comedy

We are about to find out. Show Me The Funny is a new X Factor-style talent show for emerging comedians which starts tomorrow night on ITV1.

Ironically, there is a sparsity of stand-up in the first episode as much of it is taken up with introducing the new comedians.

There is certainly a wide range of talent, including a police sergeant from Scunthorpe, a former undertaker, a former model and a Spanish barman.

The prize is worthwhile too. It comprises £100,000, a nationwide tour and a DVD of the winner in action, to be released in time for Christmas.

Mentor to the contestants in this series is Manchester comedian and former One Show presenter, Jason Manford. He is full of advice for the jokers and genuinely wants these 10 performers to succeed “The more the series goes on, the more you get to see of the comics’ stand-up,” says Manford.

“There are fewer of them as well. In the first episode, you’re really going: ‘Here are all the people. Watch next week.

Latest talent contest Show Me The Funny – Stand-Up Showdown offers some 10 aspiring comedians the chance to headline a nationwide tour, as well as their own DVD and a £100,000 prize. Here, comic-turned-judge Alan Davies offers his top tips for getting a live audience to laugh with you – not at you.

Nerves are really crippling at the start of a stand-up career. And they don't really ever go away, they're just something you have to learn to live with. If you're not nervous about going up in front of people and trying to make them laugh, you're probably slightly barmy. But the nerves do make a mess of your day. If I had a gig in the evening, I used to get nervous at about four o'clock in the afternoon and then I was good for nothing until it was over. They're the thing that makes you realise what you're doing is abnormal and maybe you should have made another choice.
