Mayor of Thanet

A FRESH face will take over the mayor's chains in Margate as 22-year-will old Will Scobie becomes the youngest in Kent to receive the honour.

Margate Charter Trustees voted on Monday night to elect the Dane Valley councillor. His deputy will be John Edwards, also Mr Scobie's ward colleague.

He will be the youngest mayor in the 155-year history of the trustees and only one mayor, Andrew Lawson of Workington, Cumbria, is more junior at 21.

After the vote, Mr Scobie promised to banish doubts that he lacks the experience for the honour.

He said: "I'm looking forward to it. Many people don't relate to the charter trustees and, being quite young, I hope to bring in more people and get in touch with different groups.

"I'll have the support of the former mayors like Iris Johnston and Brian Sullivan and a good team of people behind me."

The charter trustees are exploring gaining town council status.

The municipal borough of Margate was the local authority until 1973 and stretched from Cliftonville to Westgate-on-Sea.

Since its abolition, the civic charter is maintained by the town's elected councillors or trustees.

Both positions will be confirmed at the annual Mayor Making and annual meeting on Tuesday, May 22 at the Winter Gardens.
